Experiment: Cardboard Stop Motion

The use of puppets within animation has a long history. Looking at what is regarded as the first animated feature film, Lotte Reiniger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed was created with puppets as the stop-motion characters. While I do not have the glass and silhouette set-up Reiniger had, I was able to create a puppet to animate with. The puppet animation style is of interest to me, as it allows the hand of the creator to be seen in the materials and the animation. The use of silhouettes would shroud these handmade features.

This experiment is to consider the use of cardboard as a possible material inspiration for my animation. The design of the puppet is also similar to what I want my giants to look like. Big, faceless, but soft and non-threatening.
