Experiment: Supermarket Walk

Animation takes time. It takes effort and energy but mostly it takes time. As such, a short clip, not even with that much movement can take a week to make. As everything is created from scratch, it takes all creative energy of the creator. There are very few shortcuts to take.

The above experiment is about colour blocking and timing. The colour use and style is inspired by the images in my previous Colour Blocking post. The use of three simple colours is to not distract from the subject matter. The colours of the man is simple, but stands out due to its darkness. The giant that follows him is the brightest thing in the frame, and has a completely different texture, looking like pastel crayon and slightly translucent. The use of colour came out alright, the background still feels like it is slightly overpowering the subject matter. The different technique of the giant makes it stand out, and works to reinforce the unnaturalness of the creation.

The timing of this piece is slightly off. The man's movements are too stiff to make it feel like he is moving at a normal pace (especially considering the legs don't move). However, the slight pause in the middle of the frame feels like a natural thing to do in a location such as a supermarket. I am however aware of making it clear that the man can not see and/or feel the giant following him. At this point, it looks too much like he is waiting for the giant to catch up to him.

The feedback I received on this piece from my peers was most helpful, especially considering the size and shape of the giant being too similar to the man's shape and size. This is something to work on in the next experiment. There were furthermore some questions regarding the movement of the legs. I have done an earlier experiment with leg movement, but this experiment I did not show in class.

The walk of the character in this is very unnatural, but at least there is movement. I will have to look and work at the creation of a more natural walk, as this is going to be a common activity within Giants.
