Giants: Narrative

One of my earlier posts mentioned Slacker as a narrative inspiration to Giants.

As such, my current narrative is structured thusly:

A man in a business suit walks in the isles of a supermarket. A (wine bottle green) giant follows after him. As he walks past the wine bottles, the giant comes closer to him, almost seeming to push him toward the bottles. The man hesitates for a step, before walking on. The giant lingers for a bit longer, their hand reaching towards the man trying to pull him back. The man reaches the checkout, the giant still behind him near the wine. (shot of the giant at the wines) As the man leaves the supermarket, the giant starts following him again, slowly.

As he walks past a cafe on his way outside we start hearing the cafe sounds.

As we glide inside, the room is filled with people and their giants. We overhear a conversation about hands.  As we see shaking/fidgeting hands on the table, we see the faces of the people having the dialogue, but only when they’re not talking. The (blue) giant’s hand covers them and we are sucked into a memory, showing us why the hands are such an obsession. We see the same hand holding one with a needle in it, clearly in the hospital. The beeping of the machine stops, and the hand goes limp.

As we hear a scream and people rushing into the room, the camera looks out the window at the city.

The city landscape is littered with giants of all sizes. On of the bigger ones is deep purple and grey. We sink into the giant. A battle scarred landscape is shown, with gunshot sounds filling the sky. Blood everywhere. A face of a middle-aged man wearing an officers cap. We get pulled out and see an old man with similar features hunched over, the weight of the giant on his shoulders. He moves slowly.

A man with a stroller crosses his path, his giant is hanging over his shoulder, whispering in his ear. “You can’t do this” “You’re a terrible father” “You’ll be just like your dad”. His child is playing in the stroller (no giant yet). As they near the crossing, the man almost walks in front of a car. The tires screech and the child starts crying. The man’s giant becomes slightly bigger, looms bigger. The man crouches down to calm the child.

A middle aged woman walks past, staring for a short while before looking away. We see her giant, a big red one in foetal position laying in front of her feet. As she is also waiting to cross the road, we get sucked into the giant. It shows the woman in bed, red blood between her legs on the sheets. Her swollen belly is visible underneath a white shirt, belly button sticking out.

As she whimpers and starts crying, we get pulled into the red colour.

A red giant sits on a bench, next to it a young woman (with a small rainbow pin on their jacket). It’s clear from the person’s clothes that they have been sleeping rough for a while. A group of young people walk past, some with bright coloured hair and a rainbow tote bag. The woman looks at them and starts gathering her stuff. As she is about the get up, the giant puts its hand on her shoulder and she deflates, staying on the bench as the group walks out of her vision. She watches the park in front of her as is starts to rain.

The park transforms into a crowd of people chanting, ready for a concert as seen from the stage. All of them have giants with them, but they are standing in them due to close proximity. We see the stage with most of a band, except for the singer. As we look side stage, we see the singer, but their giant is blocking the way to the stage. The singer tries to push past, but instead gets a panic attack and throws up.

Fade to black.
