Portfolio Reflection
The Giants portfolio video shows some of the progression I have made on my dissertation project. The video shows the initial sketches, a short explanation of the concept and an animated storyboard. The progression from sketch to final design can clearly be seen.
While I am proud of the work I have down, I do also feel I could have done more. The animation is not yet completely in the style I want to use, but the storyboarding has helped me better define what I can do and how I can accurately depict what I want to appear on screen. The music is simple, but I am currently unsure if I will include much of it into my final product. Luckily this is something that can be developed further in the next semester.
The way trauma is depicted in this piece is not yet as clear as I want it to be, but this also comes with having more animated content. To create this I will have to first draw more storyboards, to then animate them and create the cleaned up animation afterwards. The usual way of working within animation is to have pre-recorded sounds and dialogue, and animate to those. My next steps will thus be to fine-tune the script, record all the dialogue (even if it's just as a demo) and then create more storyboards and start animating the real thing.
The main things I have taken away from the theoretical part of the course is to not be afraid to leave things unexplained, to appeal to the other senses of the viewer, other than just sound and vision and to not be afraid to go into the deep-end with experimenting. There are very few mistakes that do not lead to something better in the end.
